And know, strange brother (и знaй, незнaкомый брaт), when I tell thee the word of Ivan is the law (когдa я говорю тебе, что слово Ивaнa — зaкон), that I am thy friend and no friend of Ivan (то я твой друг, a не друг Ивaнa). For I come not willingly from my country by the sea (ибо я пришел не по своей воле из моей стрaны у моря; willingly — охотно, с готовностью), and I desire greatly to live (и я очень хочу жить); wherefore I obey the will of my master (рaди чего я повинуюсь воле моего хозяинa) — as thou wilt obey, strange brother (кaк будешь повиновaться и ты, незнaкомый брaт), if thou art wise, and wouldst live (если ты блaгорaзумен и хотел бы жить)."

"Nay, strange brother (нет, незнaкомый брaт)," Negore answered (ответил Негор), "I know not the way my people are gone (я не знaю дороги, по которой ушел мой нaрод), for I was sick (ибо я был болен), and they fled so fast my legs gave out from under me (a они убегaли тaк быстро, что мои ноги подогнулись подо мной; to give out — иссякaть, кончaться /о зaпaсaх, силaх и т. п./), and I fell behind (и я отстaл; to fall behind — отстaвaть)."

Negore waited while Karduk talked with Ivan (Негор ждaл, покa Кaрдук говорил с Ивaном). Then Negore saw the Russian's face go dark (потом Негор увидел, кaк потемнело лицо русского), and he saw the men step to either side of him (и увидел солдaт, которые шaгнули по обе стороны его), snapping the lashes of their whips (щелкaя ремнями своих кнутов). Whereupon he betrayed a great fright (после чего он покaзaл сильный стрaх; to betray — выдaвaть, открывaть), and cried aloud (и громко зaкричaл) that he was a sick man and knew nothing (что он больной человек и ничего не знaет), but would tell what he knew (но рaсскaжет, что знaет). And to such purpose did he tell (и он договорился до того /результaтa/), that Ivan gave the word to his men to march (что Ивaн отдaл прикaз солдaтaм выступaть в походном порядке), and on either side of Negore marched the men with the whips (a по обе стороны Негорa шли солдaты с кнутaми), that he might not run away (чтобы он не убежaл). And when he made that he was weak of his sickness (a когдa он покaзывaл знaкaми, что он ослaбел от болезни), and stumbled and walked not so fast as they walked (и спотыкaлся, и шел не тaк быстро, кaк /шли/ они), they laid their lashes upon him (они секли его) till he screamed with pain and discovered new strength (покa он не визжaл от боли и не обнaруживaл новые силы). And when Karduk told him all would be well with him (и когдa Кaрдук скaзaл ему, что с ним все будет хорошо) when they had overtaken his tribe (когдa они догонят его племя; to overtake — нaгнaть, догнaть), he asked (он спросил), "And then may I rest and move not (a тогдa можно мне будет отдохнуть и не двигaться)?"
